How To Do Modern Mock-Tudor

Love this, Ditton House, where mock-Tudor meets industrial design. What a brief to have! Surman Weston built this house in Surbiton, south-west London in 2020 and it is one of the winners of the RIBA National Awards.

There are some areas in England, specifically suburbia, where mock-Tudor houses sit side by side on mass. Quite a strange phenomenon, but I really do love how Surman Weston have seasoned their design with such recognisable details yet produced something unmistakably different to the neighbourhood's status quo.

The A-frame roof and 'timbers' fit the aesthetic perfectly. Actually built using an external steel frame, quite unusual for a house. The effect is truly lovely and it allowed much more flexibility with the inside space. 

Inside is where you see the client's preference, the industrial design comes through. A space that could potentially be cold feels like a home with 'good bones', if you know what I mean.

A worthy winner, originally spotted at Dezeen, where they have listed the other award recipients. This years prizes went to quite a mix - a school, cottage hospital holiday home and a parchment works to name a few.
